Study Points to Unusual Growth Rates in Rhythmic Gymnasts

An accomplished entrepreneur, interior designer, and artist, Liliana Bordallo has served as the director of Household Services, Inc., since 2009. In this capacity, she offers house-sitting services such as child care, cooking, maintenance, and interior design in Florida. In her leisure time, Liliana Bordallo practices rhythmic gymnastics.

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism ascribed strange height velocities to rhythmic gymnastics. Height velocity is the rate at which height increases over time.

The study analyzed 104 elite gymnasts, aged 12 to 23. The research team found that rhythmic gymnasts are typically taller and thinner than average.

The researchers think that one of the possible underlying factors is the delay in growth early in gymnastics training. Many children in rhythmic gymnasts put their bodies through intense training while adhering to strict diets. This alters the body’s metabolism and skeletal maturation process.

Average females attain skeletal maturation at 15, which means growing stops at this age. For rhythmic gymnasts, skeletal maturation continues until age 18. As a result, adults gymnasts are taller.
